​​​​The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Kabelo Gwamanda, inaugurated the 2023 Joburg Open with a striking tee-off at the Houghton Golf Club earlier today. This pivotal shot officially launched the tournament on Thursday, 23 November, marking the beginning of a remarkable international season on the Sunshine Tour.

Despite a touch of nervous anticipation, Mayor Gwamanda delivered a commendable opening shot, expressing his excitement that had been building up in the preceding weeks.

“I’m thrilled and a bit breathless; it feels like I’ve been training for a sport that requires a sprint. Connecting with the ball is the key, and we’re learning as we go. This is a moment I’ve eagerly awaited,” he shared.

Mayor Gwamanda underscored that the Joburg Open solidifies Joburg’s standing as a premier sports destination, showcasing the City’s ability to host major global events and attract potential investors.

“Players from around the world are eager to compete for the trophy. As the Executive Mayor of Joburg, I take immense pride in our City hosting such a prestigious tournament,” he added.

Expressing gratitude, Mayor Gwamanda extended thanks to the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour, sponsors, and organisers for orchestrating a splendid tournament.

“We invite investors to explore the opportunities our beautiful City has to offer — visit, work, and play in Joburg,” he urged.

In his parting words, he wished all participating players an exceptional game and encouraged residents not to miss out on the experience.
