Beatrice Monyake, a 42-year-old mother from Soweto, holds the illustrious title of reigning World Pool Champion. Her triumphant victory at the World Blackball Championship in Morocco last year cemented her position as a formidable force on the global pool stage.
Born in Kroonstad, Free State, Monyake’s journey led her to Soweto at a tender age, where her affinity for the pool table took root. Today, she’s not only a technical fleet advisor at City Power but also an advocate for breaking gender barriers in both recreational and professional spheres.
With a grin, she humorously asserts, “If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”
Monyake’s daily routine commences with a calming session at the pool table, a practise that sets her mind at ease before she prepares herself for the day ahead.
After attending to her 12-year-old son’s morning schedule, Monyake then heads to City Power’s head office in Reuven.
At work, her role involves meticulous fleet management, ensuring compliance with the Road Traffic Management Corporation Act, and overall roadworthiness.
Monyake oversees fuel usage, monitors routes, and inspects depots and garages. This diligence allows her to create detailed monthly reports and promptly identify any discrepancies.
With over two decades of experience, including serving as an office administrator for social development, Monyake’s passion for the transport industry shines.
She pursued higher education and earned a BTech in Transportation Management from the University of Johannesburg.
“I guess the transport industry has always been an interest of mine, I’m proud of myself,” she adds.
Her career path encompassed roles as a traffic officer and fleet manager at Johannesburg Water.
“I’ve always had confidence in my abilities, and to push the limits.”
Outside the corporate realm, Monyake is a beacon of mentorship, dedicating time to train young talents in her community and fostering their interest in the sport.
Reflecting on her championship victory, she exudes pride, acknowledging the challenges she overcame to secure her success.
“I am really excited about my success and overall performance. It was not an easy feat considering the resource challenges as I had to raise the funds to go there.”
She aspires for increased support from both the government and private sectors to bolster South Africa’s representation in pool on the international stage.
In Monyake’s remarkable journey, the lines between sportsmanship and professionalism blur harmoniously. The Mbokodo exemplifies resilience, dedication, and the power to inspire others to pursue their dreams with unyielding determination.
