Empowering Young Girls: A Library Outreach Programme

A vibrant and empowering event took place at Skyline Combined School in Roodepoort. The initiative, spearheaded by Monica Ramabulana, a Senior Librarian, aimed to break down barriers and inspire young women.

The event kicked off with a powerful poem that resonated with the girls, followed by a lively discussion facilitated by Tumelo Rapudi, a Library Assistant. As the girls shared their aspirations and qualities, it was clear that they were confident and determined.

Vatiswa Nkuzo, a representative from Community Safety, Gauteng Provincial Government, addressed the girls about safety and support services. She emphasised the importance of reporting threats and seeking help. The discussion highlighted the challenges faced by young girls, with strong messages about self-care and the dangers of self-harm.

“Our government is here to support you,” she assured the girls. “If you ever feel threatened, don’t hesitate—talk to someone or report it to the authorities. Help is available.”

Karabo Montse, a youth ambassador, introduced the girls to Youth Zones, safe spaces offering sexual and reproductive health services, mental health support, and self-care advice. She stressed the importance of planning for the future and avoiding unplanned pregnancies. Grace Hlatshwayo, a Maternal Coordinator, expanded on this by explaining family planning methods.

Kholofelo Moetlo from NACOSA provided practical self-defence advice and encouraged girls to join their support program. Financial literacy was covered by Jabulile Moele from FNB, who emphasised the importance of saving and budgeting. Matome Mogoboya and Mpho Morei from City’s Social Development department and Westview Clinic discussed the dangers of drug use and the importance of reporting gender-based violence.

A representative from FNB, Jabulile Moele, led a session on financial literacy. “Starting life with credit is a risky path,” she cautioned. “Learn to save early, differentiate between needs and wants, and avoid financial pitfalls. This will help you achieve your financial goals sooner. Create wealth by living within your means. Knowing where your money is going is key. Opening a savings account early, even at a young age, is a smart move.”

Matome Mogoboya, from City’s Social Development department and Mpho Morei from the Westview Clinic followed with a heartfelt discussion on the dangers of drug use, urging the girls to steer clear if they want to stay on track with their goals. They also highlighted the importance of reporting gender-based violence and provided information on local rehabilitation centres. The number is 0800428428.

The event concluded on a reflective note. Zanele Shezi shared her thoughts: “Today, I’ve learned a lot much, it was perfect. Thank you for information. I am in a better position to prepare for the future.

Thandwa Nonxeko echoed the same sentiments: “Knowledge share was empowering. Even if they call us, I’ll definitely be back.”
