In a thrilling final at Rabie Ridge Stadium, Bonolong Primary School claimed victory at the Girls Football Development Programme, a Women’s Day commemoration activity.
Bonolong Primary School from Ivory Park emerged victorious with a thrilling 3-0 win over Carter Primary School from Alexandra, securing the top spot! Diepsloot Combined School from Diepsloot also put up a strong performance, finishing as the second runner-up.
“The programme aligns with our goal of creating sporting opportunities for young girls, restoring their dignity and confidence,” remarked Mandla Mahlangu, Assistant Director of Sport and Recreation in Region A, City of Johannesburg.
The 2024 programme was a grand collaboration with notable partners, including a Miss Universe Semi-Finalist, the City’s Health Department, The Organisation for Young Women’s Dignity, CRUM, the Gauteng Department of Basic Education, and the City’s Library and Information Services.
This year saw 20 primary schools, mostly from Region A and neighbouring areas, fiercely competing on the field. The level of play skyrocketed compared to previous years, proving that when girls are given the chance, they can shine just as brightly as their male counterparts.
The excitement in the stadium was sensational as the girls showcased their skills with effortless dribbles and pinpoint passes. Ten-year-old Buhle Mantsho from Carter Primary School, despite her team’s loss to Bonolong Primary School in the finals, couldn’t hide her joy. “It was nice. I enjoyed myself. I scored a penalty,” she said with a smile. Her teammate jumped in, shouting, “Buhle is the best!” The two embraced, their spirits undimmed by the defeat.
The medal presentation ceremony was an unforgettable highlight. In a surprising and heartwarming twist, two referees handed their gold medals to Buhle and her teammate, a rare and touching gesture that left the girls with both silver and gold—a moment that will likely be cherished forever. With proper guidance, these young talents could very well be the next stars of Banyana Banyana.
Matthews Madisha, Principal of Kanana Primary School and a former professional footballer with Witbank Black Aces and Jomo Cosmos, was full of praise for the initiative. “I’m here to celebrate Women’s Day and ensure that the girls from my school get to connect with others. I want them to learn, both inside and outside the classroom, and excel. School sport is important; it brings learners, communities, and sponsors together,” he said.
Another standout activity as when Ntombi Tladinyane, Assistant Director of Library and Information Services, and her team distributed books to the girls, while The Organisation for Young Women’s Dignity provided sanitary pads—supporting both their education and well-being.
As the day drew to a close, Thabile Nene, a young program director from the Youth Friendly Organisation in Alexandra, summed up the event perfectly: “It was a great Women’s Day filled with lots of talent, skills, and exposure.”
