Women Building a Better Joburg

The construction industry has traditionally been a male-dominated space, but this is changing. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is leading the charge in empowering women to play a bigger role in shaping the city’s built environment.

Through its Economic Empowerment Programme, the JDA is focused on developing skills, creating jobs, and supporting local businesses, especially those owned by women. This commitment is evident in flagship projects like the Hikhensile Clinic and Brixton Social Cluster, both led by female-owned contractors.

The state-of-the-art Hikhensile Clinic, currently under construction, is a prime example of the JDA’s commitment to improving healthcare access. Led by Big O Developments, a female-owned company, the clinic will offer a range of services to the community, including 16 consulting rooms and a spacious waiting area.

The Brixton Social Cluster Phase Two is another significant project spearheaded by the JDA. Nkomaba Trading and Projects, a female-owned enterprise, is at the helm of this development, which includes a new library, public square, coffee shop, and upgraded recreational facilities.

These projects are not only transforming communities but also demonstrating the capabilities of women in construction. With a strong focus on skills development and support, the JDA is paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable built environment.

“The JDA is committed to fostering an inclusive and transformative construction industry,” says JDA CEO Themba Mathibe. “Through our economic empowerment programme, we aim to not only build skills and capacity but also to ensure that women have a significant role in shaping the future of Johannesburg’s infrastructure.”

“The success of projects like the Hikhensile Clinic and the Brixton Social Cluster, led by women, is a testament to our ongoing efforts to drive change and innovation in the built environment.”
