Leigh-Anne, Unsung Hero Behind the Curtain

Creating a polished and professional theatrical experience for audiences is the name of the game for Joburg Theatre Stage Manager Leigh-Anne Nanguia, who’s making a significant impact on theatre operations. Her crucial role ensures productions run smoothly from start to finish.

As a stage manager, she coordinates every aspect of a show, from rehearsals to performances. This includes everything from lighting and sound to actor cues and set changes. Leigh-Anne has worked on numerous productions, playing a vital role in the behind-the-scenes logistics and coordination essential for successful theatre performances.

“I’ve been involved in countless productions, and each one is unique,” she says. “From the people to the smallest details, every show presents new challenges and opportunities. It’s always exciting.”

Leigh-Anne’s work highlights the important contributions women make in theatre, particularly in technical and managerial roles often overlooked. “My presence in the industry showcases my skills and inspires aspiring female professionals,” she explains.

Stage management is predominantly a female-dominated role, requiring a caring yet disciplined approach. However, there are also exceptional male stage managers. “We’re responsible for looking after the entire company,” Leigh-Anne says.

“We are entrusted to take care of the company in all areas. It is often a role that may be looked down upon by male counterparts in more technical departments, but depending on the size of the production, stage managers are also called upon to be technically knowledgeable in most areas. It’s a role sometimes undervalued in more technical departments, but we also need to be technically knowledgeable.”

The job allows Leigh-Anne to meet new people and learn about the evolving world of theatre. “You need to love working with different personalities and be patient,” she says. “Everyone brings their own challenges, but in theatre, we leave those at the door. Egos can be a problem, but it’s something stage managers have to deal with.”

Leigh-Anne always wanted a creative career. After finding a pamphlet about entertainment technology, she majored in props, costumes, makeup, décor, and stage management. “Twenty years later, I’m still doing what I love,” she says.

Whether managing productions, coordinating schedules, overseeing technical aspects, or handling administration, Leigh-Anne is central to ensuring everything runs smoothly.

“Theatre is a crazy industry with many ups and downs, and I think if one finds a niche then one can thrive. I only know I look to the future with enthusiasm and anticipation,” says Leigh-Anne.
