The City of Joburg, in partnership with Westgate Mall and other stakeholders, hosted a Women’s Month event on 22 August 2024 to honour the achievements of over a hundred women from disadvantaged backgrounds in Region C.
These women were recognised for their significant contributions to agriculture and various community projects, including feeding schemes, home shelters, and support for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) victims.
The event aimed to address socio-economic challenges affecting women and promote gender equality. Dora Mashita, Regional Manager, lauded the women as ‘trailblazers’ and role models. Speakers like Refilwe Mathabatha and Rhandzu Maphophe shared valuable insights on sustainable farming, agro-processing, and women’s health.
Mathabatha inspired the audience with the potential of farming, agro-processing, and community gardening to transform homes into productive, sustainable spaces that enhance food security. She shared tips on how to turn their homes into green, productive spaces, thus contributing to sustainable living and food security. She mentioned that, as the City they do assist residents to apply for open spaces to use for community gardening as opposed to using the spaces for dumping, leading to health hazard. They also give continuous support and advise on the farming journey.
Maphophe shared important tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle for longevity, emphasizing women’s health and well-being. Twenty women were awarded trophies for their exceptional efforts in GBV and community work. Westgate Shopping Centre Management presented the awards.
The City of Joburg expressed deep appreciation for the women’s dedication and commitment. The event concluded with a networking session where attendees received information on economic opportunities and business funding.
