Orange Farm Library hosted a special event in celebration of Women’s Month by donating sanitary pads to the Clean Touch Organisation on 23 August 2024. The event, led by library staff members Queen Mhlongo and Thabiseng Fanta, focused on the importance of menstrual hygiene and health.
During her talk, Mhlongo said: “Menstrual hygiene is important for every girl. We want to make sure that our young girls feel supported and understand that their health matters.”
The guest speaker, Lizzy Kodisang from the Clean Touch Organisation, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating: “This event reminds us of the strength of women and how important it is to help each other. Right now, we do not have any funding for sanitary pads, so this donation means a lot.”
The event reached 21 teenage girls, each of whom received a pack of sanitary pads donated by the caring staff members of Orange Farm Library. One of the recipients, Lebogang Mampe, said: “I’m very happy that the library cares about us. Having these pads will help us, especially because sometimes we can’t afford them.”
This initiative represents more than just a donation of sanitary pads. It is a demonstration of community support, raising awareness about menstrual health, and showing the girls that they are not alone in their struggles. The library is ensuring that no girl has to miss school or feel embarrassed because of her period.
These initiatives inspire others to take action. By supporting the Clean Touch Organisation and the young girls of Orange Farm, the library is setting an example of kindness and solidarity. It encourages others to get involved, either through donations or volunteering, to help address the ongoing issue of period poverty.
