The city-wide Kiddies Games, a flagship programme of the Department of Community Development’s Sport and Recreation directorate, concluded yesterday with an exhilarating display of youthful energy and athleticism at the Ellis Park Arena.
Over 550 young children from various creches across the City gathered with their caregivers for a day of friendly competition. Region B emerged victorious, followed by Region C, Region A, Region F, Region D, and Region G.
Dorothy Adams, a proud representative of Region B’s Simunye School all Nations, expressed her delight. “We’re so grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a well-organized event. The kids had a nice time and enjoyed the fun and cozy atmosphere created by Sport and Recreation.”
The event kicked off with a colourful file-past featuring young athletes proudly representing their teams in vibrant colours. The enthusiastic cheers from caregivers and spectators created a festive atmosphere that highlighted the community spirit of the event.
Nomusa Ngwenya, a teacher at Lenasia South’s Tshepiso’s Kiddies World, shared her excitement. “The kids are excited! I’m incredibly proud of them. While winning is great, the most important thing is for them to enjoy themselves and have fun. Just look at their faces – they’re happy!”
Acting Director Mbulelo Bezu explained the selection process: “Teams qualified for the city-wide event by winning their respective regional competitions.”
Bezu further emphasised the event’s core objectives: “We aim to promote physical activity, teamwork, and healthy competition among our city’s youth. This programmebrings together children from diverse backgrounds, fostering unity and camaraderie.”
With an impressive turnout of 550 attendees, this year’s Kiddies Games showcased the growing popularity of the initiative and the city’s commitment to nurturing a healthier and more active generation.
Cllr Jonny Mokome, Chairperson of Community Development Section 79 Committee, officiated at the award ceremony. “This programme lays a strong foundation for our children’s future. It prepares them mentally and physically for the next stage of their education.”
