Speaker Mthembu Pays Tribute to Fallen Military Personnel and Veterans

The City of Johannesburg’s Speaker of Council, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu, hosted the 104th Annual National Civic Sunday Remembrance and Wreath-laying ceremony on Sunday, November 11, 2024, at the South Africa National Museum of Military History.

The event honours the memory of fallen military personnel and veterans who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation. It also commemorates the end of World War I hostilities.

Cllr Mthembu emphasised the significance of recognising the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families. She highlighted the importance of remembering not only those who lost their lives but also those who continue to live with the consequences of their service.

On behalf of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mthembu led the wreath-laying ceremony, joined by the City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance, Cllr Margaret Arnolds, who was representing Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero.

“As we gather here today, let us reaffirm our commitment to never forgetting the debt of gratitude owed to those who have perished in service to our country,” said Cllr Mthembu.

“Let us also remember those who continue to live with the consequences of their service, the injuries, the trauma and the lasting effects of their experiences,” she said.

The event was attended by representatives from various organisations, including the South African National Defence Force, Department of Military Veterans, and several military veterans’ associations.

The City of Johannesburg remains committed to honouring the legacy of its fallen heroes and supporting the well-being of veterans.
