Endurance Sport Fuels Kenneth’s Life

Kenneth Chiloane, better known as Kenny, has found the perfect balance between his career and passion for endurance sports.

As the Virgin Active Ride Joburg race approaches on Sunday, 17 November 2024, Kenneth is preparing to take on the challenge once again. For him cycling is more than a hobby, it’s a way to stay fit, clear the mind and stay energised.

“I am ready for the race,” he says. Kenneth says preparing for a big race requires a lot of work. He adds strength and endurance training to his schedule, coupled with a good diet.

He credits cycling, running, and spinning for keeping him grounded, energised, and focused. At 50, he is an all-rounded athlete who has completed in multiple marathons, cycling races and juggles his job as Team Leader of Fleet and Compliance at City Power.

Kenneth bought his first bicycle in 1998 after seeing how other cyclist enjoyed the sport. He used to watch from his balcony in Cape Town. Unfortunately, his first bicycle was stolen, but over the years he kept the love for cycling alive, eventually joining spinning in 2009. In 2014, he started cycling and joined the CoJ cycling team. Cycling has since become a central part of his life.

“I love the freedom it gives me. Cycling clears my mind and helps me stay focused, both in sports and in my work,” he says.

But cycling isn’t the only sport Kenneth is passionate about. He’s also a part-time spinning instructor and committed long-distance runner. He is currently preparing for his 10th Comrades Marathon next year. His combination of running and cycling is all about balance.

“I follow a strict training programme. Running is harder on the body. So, a training programme helps me maintain disciplined and a structure.”

Kenneth’s commitment to fitness extends to beyond personal goals. In 2017, he joined a global team of athletes who cycled to raise funds for primary education. Over 10 days they raised awareness for a cause close to his heart.

Kenneth is grateful for the opportunities the City gives its employees and encourages colleagues to also take up opportunities in the municipality and engage in sport.

“The City of Johannesburg is an employer that cares for its people. We pride ourselves with our employer, who’s able to partner with 947 Virgin Active to host such world class events. I encourage other employees to get out of their comfort zone and take advantage of the opportunities the City gives us.”
