MMC Mgcina and Development Planning Mark 20th GIS Day

International Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day has been celebrated globally since 1963 to highlight the transformative power of GIS technology. The City of Johannesburg first joined the celebrations in 2004, making 21 November 2024 the 20th GIS Day observed by the City.

“GIS Day is not just about technology; it’s an opportunity to show how GIS improves the lives of our residents,” said MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Eunice Mgcina.

This year, the City’s Corporate Geo-Informatics (CGIS) Directorate will showcase its flagship projects and innovations. These include practical tools like the Online Map Viewer, which allows residents to access property-related information via smartphones, empowering communities with vital, easily accessible data.

Contact details for CGIS services are available through the Online Map Viewer and will also be shared at the City’s Customer Service Centres on GIS Day.

One significant project being highlighted is the proposed changes to ward boundaries, as submitted by councillors. These updates, prepared ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, ensure fair and effective representation.

Another key initiative involves assigning street names in townships where none exist, ensuring all properties have physical addresses. “By providing physical addresses, we improve service delivery and make it easier for emergency services to reach residents in need,” MMC Mgcina explained.

Delivering exceptional customer service is central to the CGIS Directorate’s mission. “This year’s theme, ‘GIS for All – The Power of Location,’ embodies our commitment to making GIS relevant and beneficial for every resident,” added MMC Mgcina.

GIS Day celebrations will take place at Customer Service Centres across the City’s seven regions. CGIS staff will be available from 9:00 to 14:00 to assist customers and demonstrate GIS applications.
