Metro Police Games Promise a Feast of Athletic Action

The annual National Metropolitan Police Games erupted into action in eThekwini this last night, with an electric opening ceremony setting the stage for a week of intense athletic rivalry.

Despite relentless rain failing to dampen the festive mood, officers from the nation’s premier metro police departments gathered, ready to push human limits in a festival of sweat, sand, and steel along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

The stakes are sky-high, with rival forces from the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department [TMPD], Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department [EMPD], Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police Department [NMBM], and the host, Durban Metropolitan Police Department [DMPD], all vying for supremacy.

While the DMPD enjoys home ground advantage, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department [JMPD] has arrived armed with a winning history and a fierce appetite for the prestigious title of South Africa’s top metropolitan police division.

The Games, running from Monday, 29 September, to Friday, 3 October, extend beyond the pursuit of medals. They serve as a critical platform to cultivate camaraderie between agencies and reinforce bonds of trust with the public, uniting some of the nation’s fittest law enforcement officers.

Commissioner YCR Faro, Chairperson of the Metro Police Chiefs Forum, captured the spirit of the event, stating that despite the tense competition, all officers had already secured a victory. “Every day, you put your lives on the line to protect members of the communities you serve,” she said, framing the sporting clash as a testament to their daily service.

For the JMPD, the event is a deliberate investment in the holistic well-being of its personnel — physically, mentally, and morally. Ingrid Mahlangu, Director of Auxiliary Services, called on the Johannesburg contingent to compete with integrity.

“Let your performance reflect the values we uphold on our streets: fairness, respect, teamwork, and accountability,” Mahlangu urged. “Win with grace. Lose with dignity. Every sprint, every pass, every lift is not only about medals but modelling the spirit of service for the communities we protect.”

The JMPD contingent is competing to define the standard, carrying the promise: “One city. One team. One mission: bring all the trophies home.”

Usually seen upholding the law, officers have swapped their uniforms for sports gear to battle it out across a diverse programme. This year’s codes include Aerobics, Chess, Cycling, Darts, Golf, Hiking, Netball, Pool, Running, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, and Walking, offering both male and female officers the chance to showcase their athletic brilliance. The prize-giving ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, 4 October, in the coastal town of Amanzimtoti. #MetroPoliceGames2025
