Selby BRT Depot Adds Admin Block in Move Towards Safe, Reliable Public Transport

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), acting on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department, is nearing completion of the Selby Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) depot—an essential infrastructure upgrade set to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the Rea Vaya BRT system.

The Selby depot is designed to accommodate up to 270 buses and provide facilities for both major and minor maintenance of in-service and out-of-service vehicles. This centralised location will significantly reduce travel time between depots and route starting points, improving overall operational efficiency. It will serve as a central hub for Rea Vaya operations, featuring state-of-the-art workshop facilities; a double-volume wash bay building, refuelling garages and refuse buildings.

A modern administration block housing the Intelligent Transport System control centre

will include brake testing facilities, spray booths, automatic and manual bus washing stations, and a refuelling system equipped with AdBlue dispensers—ensuring the depot meets international standards for sustainable transit operations.

Construction efforts are now focused on finalising the administration block, which will include new offices, boardrooms, and meeting spaces, canteen and gymnasium for staff, among others. Once completed, the administration building will be a fully modernised space that supports the depot’s operational needs and strengthens the infrastructure behind Johannesburg’s public transport network.

“The Selby BRT Depot represents a significant milestone in Johannesburg’s commitment to building a safe, reliable, and accessible public transport system. Its completion will not only enhance the efficiency of the Rea Vaya network but also lay the groundwork for a more connected and sustainable city,” said Themba Mathibe, CEO of the JDA.
