Chilly Days Get Warm During Pimville Rec Centre’s Edutainment Programme

Excitement filled the chilly winter day as children were educated and entertained at the Pimville Recreation Centre. This wonderful experience was made possible through the partnership between The City of Johannesburg Sport and Recreation and Premier Group, featuring brands like Manhattan, Super C, Blue Ribbon and Mister Sweet.

When asked about the collaboration with Manhattan Fun Lab, Carlos Magaia, a Sport and Recreation Officer at Pimville Recreation Centre, said: “When the edutainment concept was presented to me, I saw the potential to create a safe space for children to learn and have fun through sports. This collaboration was a perfect fit for enhancing our holiday programme for children aged 6 to 13.”

“The 40-day programme, which started on June 19 and ends on July 29, has seen children flock to Pimville Recreation Centre for daily sessions. Each day, there are two sessions: one from 09:00 to 12:00 and another from 12:30 to 16:00, with 40 kids per session. The programme has also provided opportunities for local young adults, teachers, and community members to coach and mentor the children. After each session, children are safely escorted home,” said Magaia.

A refreshment station run by locals boosts the township economy, and the community’s enthusiastic support for the children fills Magaia with joy. The programme includes activities such as TV games, a science laboratory, mini basketball, musical chairs, and various coach-led games, all taking place simultaneously in the main hall.

Leanne Goodman, who works for Manhattan Fun Lab and is from Klipspruit West, expressed her excitement about the programme. “The children get to engage with each other, build skills, and make friends. This programme exposes kasi children to activities like PlayStations, physical activities, an art studio, and a science laboratory, broadening their minds and creativity.”

Ofentse Khuto, a 13-year-old participant, shared her experience: “I heard about the programme from my little sister, who said it was fun. I came to try it and I am enjoying it. The teachers are great. I would like to thank them for the opportunity and for taking the time to teach us. I wish this programme could be here every month. I do not like staying at home doing nothing.”
