Joburg Market, led by the office of Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Councillor Nomoya Mnisi, spread some cheer and hope in Meadowlands on Mandela Day. The collaborative effort saw the distribution of food parcels to over 300 elderly residents at the Nyeleti Lighthouse in Zone 10.
The event buzzed with joy and celebration. The arrival of MMC Mnisi was met with an eruption of dance from the senior attendees, eager to hear her message. In her address, MMC Mnisi encouraged the public and leaders to extend their acts of goodwill beyond Mandela Day. She urged everyone to strive for continuous efforts in sowing seeds of hope within their communities.
The Meadowlands Care for the Aged Club expressed their gratitude to MMC Mnisi and Joburg Market for their generosity. Theressa Mokgeti, an 81-year-old resident, highlighted the rarity of such acts of kindness, making the experience even more special.
“I am so happy that MMC Mnisi and Joburg Market haven’t forgotten us grannies,” she said. “Their commitment to doing good in the community is truly appreciated. It would be wonderful to see more acts of kindness like this from our leaders.”
The Department of Social Development, in collaboration with Owe2 Green Economy, also commemorated the day with a service delivery blitz for community members in Poortjie. Joburg Market was among the stakeholders who participated in lending a helping hand during this initiative.
