Roodepoort’s Senior Citizen Receive Five-Star Treatment

Region C in Johannesburg celebrated Mandela Day by hosting a breakfast for senior citizens at the Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre in Roodepoort. The event, held on 18 July 2024, aimed to honour the elderly and embody Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service and community.

The event reflected the spirit of Mandela Day – fostering community engagement and recognising those who enrich society. It resonated with Mandela’s enduring message of compassion and service, with the theme “It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”.

The day began with a communal exercise session, a regular activity for the elderly. They then enjoyed health screenings before a celebratory breakfast. A special highlight was Gogo Constance Ngubane’s 86th birthday, which coincided with Mandela’s. A surprise birthday cake and a dance with the Regional Director and attendees brought smiles to all.

Biokinetics instructor Rhandzu Maphothe emphasised the importance of exercise for physical well-being and quality of life. Social worker Matshidiso Tose raised awareness of gender-based violence, encouraging reporting to social services or the police.

Helen Nkosi, a senior citizen, expressed her appreciation: “We are grateful to the City for making a difference in our lives.”

Regional Director Mlamleli Belot thanked everyone who contributed to the event’s success, especially the honoured guests.
