Celebrating Success: Highlights From the 2025 Employee Engagement Day

The fourth edition of the City of Johannesburg’s Employee Engagement Day wrapped up on a high note at Marks Park in Emmarentia on Friday, 11 April 2025.

What began as a modest gathering in 2020 has evolved into a major highlight on the City’s internal calendar, drawing over 5 000 employees from departments across the metro.

Originally launched in February 2020, the first engagement day took place at the Metro Centre Piazza, where staff came together for light-hearted games and wellness activities — all designed to encourage fun and fitness. While the momentum was briefly halted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the team worked tirelessly to bring the initiative back, much to the delight of staff. The event has since grown in popularity and continues to reinforce a sense of community and staff appreciation.

The day featured spirited addresses from the Acting City Manager, Tshepo Makola, and the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Loyiso Masuku.

Makola encouraged staff to take full advantage of events centred around wellness, joy, and interaction, stressing that the initiative is designed for their benefit — with the aspiration of making it a quarterly occurrence.

Cllr Masuku acknowledged the everyday struggles faced by City employees. She committed to tackling serious workplace challenges including excessive workloads, financial strain, loan sharks, discrimination, favouritism, and workplace harassment. “My doors are always open,” she assured employees, underscoring her commitment to listening and acting on staff concerns. She confirmed that another Employee Engagement Day is planned for May 2025, during which executives will respond directly to staff feedback in real time.

Beyond the speeches and serious dialogue, the day was bursting with energy, thanks to a wide range of activities and exhibitor stands. Red Bull kept everyone fuelled with energy drinks, while Joburg Market handed out fresh fruit to energise participants. Exhibitors included Virgin Active, MTN, Moso Consulting, Library and Information Services, Old Mutual, FNB, Liberty, and the Jabu Stone Natural Hair brand, among many others — all offering something to suit diverse staff interests.

The event closed with an awards ceremony celebrating outstanding achievements across various sporting codes. Congratulations were for standout participants including Kenneth Morris, Nhlamulo Mathebula, Neo Radebe, Tshokolo Madungoane, Thabiso Mahlatji, Tebogo Mabe, and Thamsanqa Hlongwane.

While some City officials may be nursing sore muscles and a few bruises, they’re also proudly showcasing new trophies in their cabinets — a worthy trade-off. New friendships were formed, old bonds were rekindled, and the Joburg “we can do” spirit was reignited in full force.

Employee Engagement Day continues to be a powerful reminder of the City’s commitment to a supportive, inclusive, and spirited workplace. Here’s to an even bigger celebration next time — see you in May 2025!
