The 2024 Males Netball Championship brought electrifying moments to Ellis Park Arena, with Johannesburg proudly extending its congratulations to Ekurhuleni and Tshwane for their outstanding victories.
In the Senior Division, Ekurhuleni clinched the top spot, while Johannesburg secured a well-deserved second place, followed by the West Rand. In the Under-23 Division, Tshwane triumphed as champions, with Johannesburg and Cape Town taking second and third places respectively.
During the celebrations, Tebogo Sempe, a former player turned coach, reflected on his journey with contagious excitement: “I started playing netball back in 1997 in high school, thanks to principal James Lituka, who pushed us to embrace multiple sports. Initially seen as a female-dominated sport, netball was never a problem for us boys, especially since our coach created mixed training sessions. Competing alongside the girls helped them dominate district competitions.”
Sempe praised the evolution of male netball in South Africa: “The sport has grown beyond expectations. Watching these championships, it’s heartwarming to witness players showing off their skills — high jumps, strong passes, and a harmony that flows through each game. The energy and love in and outside the court are something special.”
Johannesburg councillor Norman Masindi highlighted the significance of hosting such a remarkable event at Ellis Park: “This was a deliberate effort to bring vibrancy back to the inner city and reinforce Johannesburg’s status as a leading sports precinct in Africa. The energy and possibilities in the inner city are endless, and we are committed to positioning Johannesburg as a hub of sporting excellence, not only for South Africa but the entire continent.”
The 2024 Males Netball Championship was not just a celebration of athleticism, but a display of unity, passion, and a vision for a thriving future in African sports.
