Library Assistant Tebello Sengoara Recognised Internationally for Eco-Friendly ‘Green Shelf Network’ Idea

Tebello Sengoara (33), a Library Assistant at Linden Library, received an honorary mention at the prestigious Next Library Changemaker Awards 2025 in for her innovative “Green Shelf Network” concept.

The idea reimagines libraries as modular gardens that integrate eco-literacy with traditional library services. Through this concept, residents could borrow books and gardening tools, nurture seedlings in recycled bookcases, and attend workshops on composting and urban gardening. Next Library Changemakers is an annual conference and connects librarians across the world to share innovative ideas on leading libraries towards a sustainable and greener future.

“It was an exciting moment when I heard I received an honorary mention. It proves that libraries can lead our City towards a greener future,” she says.

Tebello is passionate about sustainability and digital learning. “I just thought it would be so interesting to step into a library and over the same counter borrow a book and gardening supplies.”

She credits e-Learning Manager Jeff Nyoka for encouraging her to submit the idea and says she would be ecstatic to see the Green Shelf Network implemented in City libraries. “I would be ecstatic because it covers so many aspects, hunger, literacy and community. It’s a huge passion of mine to serve the community, I guess that’s why I work in libraries.”

When imagining the concept implemented in the City she envisions a rooftop garden with sunlight, and residents gardening and learning together.

Tebello joined the City in 2019 as a relief worker and was appointed as a Library Assistant in 2021. With a background in curation, media, and the creative sector, she describes herself as creative, empathetic, and tenacious. A self-confessed ‘jazz junkie’, she collects records, frequents art galleries, and enjoys live music.

“When I’m not being creative at work, I’m creative in my personal space,” she says. Looking ahead, Tebello hopes Johannesburg libraries will embrace sustainability and play a bigger role in building a greener city.
