Local Artist Mongezi Ncombo Creates Masterpiece at Joburg Open

A brush, canvas, and the stunning fairways of Houghton Golf Club provided the perfect inspiration for local artist Mongezi Ncombo to create a masterpiece during the Joburg Open Pro-Am on Tuesday, 4 March 2025.

Mongezi, who thrives with a brush in hand, described the live painting experience as a career highlight. His work quickly became the focal point of the event, drawing admiration from passers-by. “That’s beautiful,” and “Spectacular, lovely work!” were among the praises he received.

The City of Johannesburg, in partnership with Spier, offers opportunities for small businesses and emerging entrepreneurs to showcase their talents during the Pro-Am and Joburg Open. Mongezi, part of Spier’s mentorship programme, was invited to display his skills.

Specialising in capturing Johannesburg’s skyline and the vibrancy of its people, Mongezi incorporates post-it stamps into his artworks, a signature touch that has earned him a growing following. “Post-it stamps are symbolic to my work. I’ve even received collections from people,” he says.

His art reflects the city’s dynamic energy and resilience, blending mixed media, acrylics, and ink drawings. “I aim to tell stories of ambition, connection, and shared success,” Mongezi explains. “I invite viewers to pause, reflect on everyday beauty, and rediscover the joy of community.”

Growing up in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, Mongezi credits his mother for nurturing his early love for drawing. “I knew I’d be an artist since I was seven,” he recalls. “Growing up in an underprivileged community sparks creativity—you learn to improvise and create with what you have.”

By the end of the evening, Mongezi’s masterpiece had sold for an undisclosed amount, marking a significant milestone. “This is one of the best moments of my life. The exposure is life-changing,” he said.

The 17th Joburg Open officially teed off on Thursday, 6 March 2025, with the Executive Mayor, Cllr Dada Morero, hitting the opening shot. Co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, the tournament ends on Sunday, 9 March 2025.

The event is open to spectators. Tickets are available for purchase on the Sunshine Tour website Sunshine Tour Events.
