Joburg Market’s Opportunity Centre Hosts Successful Agri Business Workshop

Over 60 emerging farmers participated in a stimulating, interactive, and informative networking session on Tuesday, 30 July 2024, at the Joburg Market’s Opportunity Centre in City Deep, Johannesburg.

The event aimed to empower emerging farmers in and around Johannesburg, encouraging them to drive change in the agricultural sector, enhance their knowledge of the agricultural business, and expose small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) to various opportunities.

The workshop was a resounding success, with engaging interactions between the speakers and the attendees, all eager to learn and foster growth in their businesses.

Sophy Mosabeni, the founder and CEO of Vhegies, led a compelling session where she shared her personal journey and offered practical advice for the emerging farmers in attendance. Mosabeni emphasised the importance of dedication, hard work, and learning from those who have succeeded in a similar field.

“Farmers must understand that every successful farmer began somewhere. Invest time in learning about your craft and build strong relationships with mentors. Be patient and do not get discouraged by setbacks; they are just part of the journey. And remember, never stop learning and adapting to new trends in agriculture,” Mosabeni advised.

Another speaker who further motivated the farmers was Beauty Aphane, the founder and CEO of Reithomile Farmers, shared her experiences in spinach and lettuce farming. Aphane advised the attendees on the importance of research and market analysis before beginning production. She encouraged the attendees to actively seek opportunities and pursue them, as eventually one door will open.

Attendees learnt about business compliance from Joburg Market Opportunity Centre Manager Akona Bovula, who delivered a detailed presentation on the importance of proper business registration and funding opportunities available from different stakeholders and explained how these could be accessed through the services offered by the City’s Opportunity Centres.

Participants raised concerns about challenges in accessing funds for their small businesses. They were immediately directed on how they can access the Opportunity Centre’s services.

Two attendees, Thokozane Hlela and Nosicelo Mphaphu, expressed their gratitude for the workshop. “As a new farmer, I gained so much valuable information that will help me grow my business. The speakers were knowledgeable and inspiring, and I left feeling motivated and better prepared for the challenges,” Mphaphu said.

To further provide the SMMEs with advice and support, the Joburg Market Opportunity Centre will host a workshop for those in construction on Wednesday, 7 August 2024. Further details will be shared soon.
