Curated by acclaimed artist Bonolo Kavula, “Invisible Thread” will feature a collective exhibition exploring themes of identity, memory, and connection. This special project is a key component of Latitudes’ annual INDEX programme, an initiative dedicated to providing exposure and professional development for emerging artistic talent.
Each participating artist brings a unique perspective to the exhibition, working across various mediums, including:
- Printmaking
- Sculpture and
- Textiles.
They are united by a shared commitment to experimentation and artistic vulnerability. Kavula, who also mentors the featured artists, describes the project as an “axis of proximity,” where diverse creative practices converge to form a broader narrative of cultural expression and mutual support.
“This platform goes beyond display,” says Kavula. “It scaffolds young artists through mentorship, collaboration, and curatorial guidance, many of whom are showing at a major art fair for the first time.”
The “Invisible Thread” lineup includes:
- Yonela Doda (thread collages)
- Khanyi Mawhayi (oil stick and thread)
- Tshepo Phokojoe (hessian and fabric sculpture)
- Unathi Mkonto (African modernism and spatial design)
- Tinyiko Makwakwa (layered textiles)
- Thato Makatu (printmaking)
- Dineo Ponde (ink and thread on fabric), and
- Bonolo Kavula (Shweshwe-based abstraction).
