City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero says the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offers exciting opportunities to unlock Africa’s agricultural potential and secure a stronger position in global markets.
Speaking at the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) conference in Sandton, Mayor Morero reaffirmed the City’s role in reshaping food systems. “Johannesburg is ready to be a connector — a hub for fresh produce movement, trade partnerships, and innovation across the continent.”
The three-day conference, themed “The African Edition: Shaping the Future of Fresh Produce Markets through Sustainability, Innovation and Inclusivity”, gathered international delegates to focus on food system resilience and inclusive growth.
Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Development Cllr Nomoya Mnisi said wholesale markets must be repositioned as key players in ensuring food security, driving economic growth, and responding to climate change.
She celebrated the Joburg Market’s recent milestones: “As Africa’s largest fresh produce market — and among the top five globally — the Joburg Market exceeded R1 billion in monthly turnover three times last year. This highlights its critical role in feeding communities and supporting livelihoods.”
WUWM chairperson Stéphane Layani praised the City, calling the Joburg Market a “beacon of excellence” committed to transformation and socio-economic impact.
Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau emphasised agriculture’s strategic value. “With over 61 million people to feed, food security is a national priority. Our policies support infrastructure upgrades, cold chains, and post-harvest storage to boost productivity.”
The WUWM conference is expected to strengthen Africa’s fresh produce sector, attract investment, and position Johannesburg at the centre of agricultural innovation.
