Van Der Walt Signs off After 36 Years as Joburg’s Go-to Building Inspector

After 36 years of dedicated service, the City of Johannesburg’s esteemed building inspector, André van der Walt, is hanging up his hard hat. Known for his tough but fair approach, he built a reputation for integrity and a no-nonsense attitude that ensured the city’s buildings remained safe and compliant.

His retirement marks the end of an era—and the beginning of a well-earned new chapter.

Monday, 31 March 2025, will be his final day with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). Reflecting on his career, Van der Walt describes it as deeply fulfilling. “There were ups and downs, but I have no regrets—I truly enjoyed my job,” he says.

What he cherished most was hearing clients say “thank you for your help”. “That kind of appreciation is beyond words,” he adds.

Throughout his tenure, Van der Walt worked with countless clients and managed a wide range of responsibilities, from pre-concrete casting inspections and open drain assessments to routine and final inspections. His role also included finalising paperwork and overseeing stormwater management.

For Van der Walt, becoming a building inspector was more than a job—it was a calling, driven by a passion for sharing his expertise. Over the years, he contributed to major projects, including the Olivedale Netcare Hospital, clinics, schools, factories, and office blocks.

His career path began in high school when he discovered a talent for working with his hands. He started as an apprentice carpenter with South African Railways, later qualifying and even lecturing in carpentry at the Building Industries Federation of South Africa. Before joining the City of Johannesburg, he spent six years as a building inspector for the Benoni City Council.

A lifelong learner, Van der Walt holds a Diploma in the Building Industry and plans to continue expanding his knowledge in retirement. “I’m stepping into a different lifestyle,” he says.

Married for 40 years and a proud father of two sons, Van der Walt is a devoted family man who cherishes time with his loved ones. In retirement, he looks forward to consulting work, travel, gardening, and—one day—building his own dream home.

Having overcome two health scares, Van der Walt feels profound gratitude. “Not everyone reaches retirement alive and healthy, so I’m thankful to my Maker. This is a new chapter—no more rushing.”

While excited for the future, he admits he’ll miss his colleagues. “The City gave me the chance to express myself and help ratepayers. That meant everything.”

As Van der Walt closes this professional chapter, his legacy of dedication, expertise, and fairness will endure in Johannesburg’s skyline—and in the colleagues and clients who benefited from his unwavering commitment.
