In a nail-biting final round at the SunBet Challenge Sun City golf tournament, former Joburg Open sponsor’s invitee, Tristin Galant, secured an astounding second place. The tournament took place at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City recently.

After a neck and neck round, Galant and Jacques Blaauw had to play a sudden-death playoff. Blaauw emerged victorious and Galant secured a second position beating stiff competition. Galant shot 70 on the final day.

Bongi Mokaba, the City of Johannesburg’s Director of Events Management, expressed delight at Galant’s performance. “This is a clear indication of his determination. I would have loved for him to win but finishing top 2 is a huge achievement,” says Mokaba.

“Gary Player Country Club is not an easy course,” she adds.

She mentions other elite players who played in the SunBet Challenge Sun City with the likes of Thriston Lawrence (former Joburg Open winner), Keenan Davidse, Heinrich Bruiners, Jean Hugo and Danie van Tonder, which indicates the fierce competition in the tournament.

“There are still many tournaments to come on Sunshine Tour’s calendar, but following Tristin’s recent performance he has gone up on the order of merit to Top 5 and that’s exciting. He is young and ambitious and only turned pro in 2022.”

Mokaba notes that the City’s partnership with Sunshine Tour and the commitment to developing players are yielding results.

Galant, who hails from Cape Town, was invited to play in the City’s world-class international golf tournament, the Joburg Open in 2023. Through the City’s commitment to creating opportunities and promoting development and diversity, the City of Johannesburg extends sponsor invites to the Joburg Open International Golf Tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour.
