City Casts Net Wide for Bright Sparks to Generate Impactful Solutions

The City of Johannesburg is spearheading innovation for a modern urban future with the launch of the Community Innovation Challenge and Awards 2024. Monique Griffith, Head of Innovation Partnerships at the Smart City office, says this initiative aims to drive the City’s co-production and modernisation efforts by merging creativity and collaboration.

She says the Community Innovation Challenge and Awards encourage meaningful innovation among City residents at the regional and ward levels within Johannesburg. It also recognises and rewards individuals, teams, and local organisations for innovations that can be piloted at community level.

“At the heart of the City’s approach is its comprehensive Innovation Framework. This is not just a set of guidelines but a strategic roadmap outlining how the City plans to foster a culture of innovation. It emphasises the importance of creating an environment where both employees and residents, no matter their rank or status, can collaborate to generate impactful solutions,” says Griffith.

Nelson Sekgota, Project Manager at Wits University’s Tshimologong Precinct, says the official launch date will be announced soon and that interested parties should take note of the application criteria:

Problem: The innovation must identify an existing or foreseeable problem that could reduce residents’ quality of life, enjoyment, or efficiency.

Solution: The innovation must present a specific solution to the identified problem. It should explain how the solution will address the issue, how residents will engage with it, and its longevity.

  • Impact: The idea must lead to a visible change in residents’ experiences, evident to those it aims to benefit.
  • Reach: The solution should address a problem affecting a large group of people or a wider area.
  • Service Enhancement: The solution must demonstrate the potential to visibly improve public services delivered by the City.
  • Proactive Community: Solutions should empower the community to take initiative and address their challenges independently.
  • Ideas: Innovations must be new, novel, and unique ways of resolving ongoing problems.
  • Usability: The innovation should have a reasonable prospect of implementation and a net benefit to community members.
  • Phases of Implementation: Submissions must outline the phases required to develop the idea towards implementation.
  • Itemised Costing: Innovations must be low-cost but realistically priced to support a proof of concept or pilot phase to test the solution in a real-time environment. Solutions exceeding R300,000 will not be considered.
  • Intellectual Property (IP): Ideas must be the intellectual property of the submitting party, open source or indicate that the submitting party has the rights (licence) to use the IP.
  • Submissions: Must be submitted electronically on the provided form and signed by the innovator or lead representative if submitted by a team.

Sekgota emphasises that the solutions should address the most significant issues, bottlenecks, or problems residents face daily. The innovations should suggest new approaches, practices, or processes that enhance the delivery of any government service to residents. He says with the participation of Wits Tshimologong, the Community Innovation Challenge and Awards represents necessary collaborations that take significant steps toward a more agile and responsive city.

Griffith concludes: “By redefining innovation and encouraging contributions that are both unique and valuable, the City is setting the stage for transformative changes. As residents and employees engage with this challenge, Johannesburg is poised to become a model of modern urban management, where creativity and collaboration drive progress and enhance the quality of life for all its inhabitants.”
