The City of Johannesburg has announced the partial closure of Lenasia Crematorium for essential maintenance from 28 January to 11 February 2025.
Cremator Machines Nos. 1 and 2 are undergoing refurbishment, leaving only Cremator No. 3 operational. During this period, cremations will be limited to two non-attendance services a day, where families are not present. Mourners will also be unable to access the site for safety reasons.
Funeral directors are advised that bookings will be handled on a “first come, first served” basis, provided all required documentation is submitted in advance. Residents requiring immediate cremation services are encouraged to use the Braamfontein or Brixton Crematoriums, which remain fully operational.
Routine maintenance is crucial to ensure the cremators operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental regulations. The City apologises for any inconvenience and appreciates the community’s patience as it works to restore full services by 11 February 2025.
In parallel, the City is reviewing its cemetery, crematoria, and public open spaces bylaws to modernise and improve service delivery. Residents are invited to review the draft bylaws on the City’s website (www.joburg.org.za/bylaws) and provide feedback.
