A dedicated City employee since 2001, Mlambo currently serves as the Manager for Collection in the Arts, Culture & Heritage Directorate’s Museum Africa. Her award-winning concept, the “African 3D Map Maze”, is a virtual museum exhibition that leverages museum collections, research, and text to create a captivating virtual experience.
This innovative exhibit uses animation, sound, and six strategically placed LCD video panels, each exploring a theme. These themes delve into the rich tapestry of African intelligence, inventions, cultural heritage, and natural resources. A central projector ties the entire experience together, introducing the overarching narrative that connects all the LCD panels.
Extensive research underpins the videography and animation, ensuring the themes depicted on touchscreens are meticulously supported.
“Our museums and their collections are more than just physical spaces and traditional narratives,” Mlambo explains. “The 3D Map Maze is a testament to how museums can expand into progressive interpretation methods.”
Clearly surprised and humbled by the recognition, Mlambo shared: “Honestly, receiving this award feels surreal. Recognition like this is rare for municipal employees, so I’m incredibly honoured. It feels like I’ve finally left a lasting mark on the museum I’m so passionate about.”
The African 3D Map Maze will be showcased at Redhill College’s Africa Month celebrations. Mlambo enthusiastically encourages her fellow City employees to actively participate in such initiatives and bring intentionality to their work.
“There’s so much potential for Heritage Practitioners in our City,” she remarks. “One of my biggest aspirations is to see our museums compete with international institutions, offering a comprehensive and engaging experience.”
