Over 70 Entrepreneurs Graduate in Style

The Roodepoort City Hall was abuzz with anticipation as entrepreneurs gathered on Friday, May 10 2024, to celebrate a significant milestone: the awarding of National Certificates (NQF level 2) in Construction Contracting. Amidst the excitement, 71 aspiring entrepreneurs eagerly awaited their certificates after completing a training programme.

Entrepreneurs play a crucial role in driving economic growth and job creation, making their success vital to the City of Johannesburg’s goals. The City’s Department of Economic Development, in partnership with Sanral through the ACS/TJEKA, provided training and development opportunities for small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the construction sector.

The initiative aimed to empower SMMEs with essential business and tendering skills to enhance their ability to secure construction projects in the future. Specifically, it focused on educating SMMEs on bidding processes, accurate quotation preparation, and tender negotiation strategies.

The training spanned 15 days, with an additional seven days for assessments, totalling 22 days. To date, the Isiqalo Opportunity Centre has trained 71 SMMEs divided into three groups.

Tshegare Moletsane from Sanral emphasised the urgent need for community development projects and Sanral’s commitment to supporting local enterprises. He highlighted Sanral’s plan to provide practical support, including mentors and supervisors, to local enterprises.

The City established Opportunity Centres (OCs) to create a conducive environment for small businesses. OCs aim to support SMMEs through various programmes such as training, mentorship, and coaching.

Sanelisiwe Ziqubu, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude for the course, stating that it enabled them to tender their documents independently and price accordingly, without relying on third parties.

Simphiwe Malimela, Deputy Director of Enterprise Development, commended the graduates and encouraged them to continue their learning journey. Accredited by the Construction SETA, the programme equips graduates with industry-standard skills, enhancing their competitiveness.

In conclusion, the ceremony marked a significant step towards empowering SMMEs in the construction sector, fostering economic growth, and creating sustainable businesses.
