City Pumped up for the 28th Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg

The City of Johannesburg is pleased to announce the 28th edition of the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg, scheduled for Sunday, 26 October 2025, at the FNB Stadium.

Recognised as the world’s second-largest timed cycling event after the Cape Town Cycle Tour, this prestigious race will attract thousands of cyclists to a 97-kilometre route showcasing Johannesburg’s landmarks — including Soweto Highway, Main Reef Road, and the city’s historic mine dumps. The event will conclude at FNB Stadium, where participants and spectators will enjoy a family-friendly festival atmosphere featuring entertainment, food stalls, and various activities.

To ensure the safety of all participants and spectators, the City — in partnership with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Johannesburg Roads Agency, and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport — will implement full road closures from 03:00 to 17:00. The route will be supported by eight refreshment stations, medical points, and emergency teams to ensure smooth operations throughout the day.

Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero commended the organisers, volunteers, and City officials for their commitment to delivering another successful edition of the event.

“The Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg has become an important fixture on the city’s sporting calendar, symbolising Johannesburg’s resilience, unity, and progress. The event provides a unique opportunity to showcase our city’s world-class infrastructure and hospitality, while promoting a culture of healthy living and community participation,” said Mayor Morero.
